About - John Banyard

About Me

I am a London based photographer and videographer working with film and digital across many fields. I started out shooting on film stock back in the 80's. I had a basement studio in Marble Arch an began capturing the London streets and the New Romantic scene on 35mm and 120mm film. My first SLR was a Canon AE1 Program (which I still own) and then a medium format Bronika ETRS (I still have one of these too). Soho was a very different place back then, more edgy and definitely less clean, in every sense!

These days I work in both digital and film depending on the subject and the effect I'm, or the client, is looking for. I have a vast array of professional cameras and kit for every occasion.

Aoife Mc Mahon

"I've known John's work for many years now and have always admired his ability, not only to create a beautiful image, but to capture the spirit of the moment and the unique soul of the person. We recently did some headshots together and I was grateful for both his talent and his endless patience. He has a great eye for light and we used several different setups and backgrounds to find the perfect one. John is a warm and wonderful person and I think this shines through in his work as he always brings out the best in his subject." Aoife Mc Mahon

Blanche Ellis

I know John not only as a fantastic photographer but a unique, creative collaborator. We've worked together on many art and music projects in photography and film as well as more cross-disciplinary ventures. Whatever the project, John will find the right lens, tool, location or approach, and bring it to the table with creativity, warmth, enthusiasm and skill. A complete joy to work with, John sees the world in shades of possibilities and solutions and I’m always amazed by what he can make possible. Drawing from a deep well of experience John adapts his techniques to draw out what is needed from each subject or occasion. I look around to find that almost every musician I have known in recent years has been portrayed by John's lens and has used his work for album covers or music videos. John's archives are treasure trove, capturing an epoch and the intimate pulse of London's music scene. I look forward to his exhibition and to future collaborations! blancheelis.com & blancheillustrates.wordpress.com

Jack Harris

"John’s got a clear, sensitive eye for an image, and he’s a perfectionist. In the studio he’ll put even the most camera shy of us at ease, and you won’t know he’s at your gig until he shows you all the brilliantly captured pictures he’s taken. A gentleman and a excellent photographer." jackharrismusic.com
